Alex Macdonald

Alex Macdonald is an accomplished energy executive and engineer with over 35 years of global upstream experience. His career spans complex technical leadership across exploration, integrated asset management, and large-scale decommissioning.

Beginning in the 1990s with Hess, Enterprise Oil, and Shell, he gained extensive operational expertise as a Senior Drilling Supervisor in the UK and Ireland before moving into international leadership as Drilling Manager for Greece and the UAE.

He later oversaw integrated development planning for major offshore fields, including Qatar’s North Field and Iran’s South Pars.

In 2002, he co‑founded SPD, transforming it into the world’s leading independent well project management firm. Following SPD’s acquisition by Petrofac, Alex held senior executive roles, most recently Managing Director for Petrofac Asset Solutions. He holds engineering degrees from Heriot-Watt and Robert Gordon universities.
